Walter Glenn "Bud" Britt

–

Madison, Indiana

Mr. Walter Glenn "Bud" Britt, age 82, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Sunday, February 15, 2026 at Thornton Terrace in Hanover, Indiana. He was born in Franklin, Kentucky in 1943 to Walter and Vera Mae Britt.

After birth, the Britt family moved to Mars Hill, billed as the "Industrial City", on the southwest side of Indianapolis where Bud grew up and attended Ben Davis Schools. It was here that he met and eventually married his childhood sweetheart, Karen Sue Scherer Britt, on December 21, 1963. Even though December 21st is the Winter Solstice, the shortest day of the year, Bud often joked their anniversary was the longest day of the year. They recently celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary.

Bud and Karen went on to have three children, Tom, Kevin, and Julie and moved to the fastest-growing Indianapolis suburb in 1971 - Greenwood, Indiana. The family home was located on Berry Road with a farm field in front and back with plenty of room for a large garden which was Bud's lifelong hobby. During these years, the Britt family often visited their extended Britt family back in Franklin, Kentucky. Weekend and holiday visits often included horseshoes, heated euchre tournaments, fireworks from Tennessee, and a lot of joke telling. Bud was often featured in the "Greenhorn Newsletter", a closed-circulation magazine for the family, published in the late 1980's.

Eleven years later in 1982, after frequent visits to a Scherer family farm, Bud decided to move further out into the county and purchased a home in rural Martinsville with more room for his growing children, larger garden, and space to raise chickens. Soon thereafter, Bud ran and completed the Indianapolis 500 Festival Mini Marathon. It would be his first and last race.

Bud worked for 41 years in the shipping and receiving department at Standard Die Supply in downtown Indianapolis until 2005, when he retired. With all three children graduated from Martinsville High School, Bud and Karen built a small cabin near Madison, Indiana. Their 40-acre property was adjacent to his son, now Madison family doctor, Kevin, and his family.

Later in life, Bud became an unintentional real estate mogul - buying, living in, and selling eight homes in eight years. In one instance, he bought a home with his older brother Jack in Port Richey, Florida with the intention of escaping cold Madison winters. After a disagreement, Bud drove an hour east and bought a second home in Bartow, Florida to put some distance between himself and Jack. Weeks later, they reconciled, Bud sold the Bartow home for a profit and moved back to Port Richey. Every real estate transaction Bud engaged in netted him a profit - even after realtor fees.

Throughout his life, Bud was a devout Christian and faithfully attended Church of Christ churches in Indianapolis, Trafalgar, Greenwood, and Madison. He taught Sunday school classes, gave sermons, led singing and invocations, volunteered for outreach and social activities, and served as a deacon. Bud was also a devoted husband and father, grandfather to eight, and great-grandfather to ten.

Bud also enjoyed woodworking, fishing, day trips to Indiana State Parks, vacations to Gatlinburg, and was best known for growing the region's tallest and biggest hormone-free tomatoes. Throughout all his life's travels, he never flew in an airplane and never got in water more than knee deep.
