Madison, Indiana
Julia "Julie" Anne Johnston Crawford, age 88, of Madison, Indiana entered this life on February 23, 1932 in Memphis, Tennessee. She was the loving daughter of John W. Sr. and Martha Walker Johnston. Her mother played piano and made sure that she and her brothers were introduced to and learned to appreciate music. As a teenager, she was an active member of the Order of Rainbow for girls, where she received the Grand Cross of Color, meaning she had completed required memory work and had shared her Christian beliefs with many others all over the state. She grew up in a Christian home and attended Whitehaven Presbyterian Church where she became very active in the Women of the Church. She was a 1950 graduate of Whitehaven High School. She was united in marriage to Harry J. Crawford, Jr. on December 8, 1950 in Memphis, Tennessee. This happy union of nearly forty years was blessed with a son. Harry was a carpenter and built them a home on property given to them by her father. She worked for Rotary Lift/Dover Corp. in Memphis as a blueprint operator and later worked in electrical drafting. She always wanted to be a doctor but her parents thought it "unladylike" so she later went to work in one of the largest hospitals in Memphis where she learned surgery instruments and sterilization techniques. She studied and advanced to the Intensive Cardiac Care Unit and was responsible for observing heart telemetry monitors and assisted the staff that attended to the patients. She worked at Baptist Memorial, Methodist, and St. Francis Hospitals in Tennessee. In 1984 she became the caregiver for her mother and her aunt. Her husband also became ill around that time and she spent the next seven years attending to her loved ones. She moved to the Madison, Indiana area to be near her son when he was transferred in 1992. She later worked as the receptionist at Hanover College for ten years and then as a house mother at Chi Omega for a time. Before leaving Memphis, she was a member of Longstreet United Methodist Church in Tennessee and then became a faithful member of Hanover Baptist Church after moving to the community. She loved being a mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She enjoyed spending time with church family, her family, journaling, scrapbooking and in her younger years whittling and woodcarving. In her later years, she enjoyed connecting with friends and family on FaceBook. Julie died on Sunday, January 31, 2021, at 1:45 a.m. at her son's home in Hanover, Indiana.
