Madison, Indiana
Mr. John Evan Buchanan, age 70 of Madison, Indiana, passed away on Thursday July 7, 2022 of cardiac arrest in the emergency room at Norton King's Daughters' Hospital. A beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, friend, and neighbor, John shared his sharp intellect, deep curiosity and sweet kindness with everyone he met. Born in a farmhouse on Bacon Ridge near Canaan, John lived his entire life on the farm settled by his ancestors in the 19th Century. Since the mid-1970s, John faithfully recorded his daily activities in a journal, detailing the joys of fatherhood, labor of farming and daily weather on the farm acres and woods he loved. John Buchanan grew up the youngest of the seven sons born to Gordon and Leila Buchanan, with the entirety of Jefferson County as a playground for the boys to explore on bike. He graduated with the Madison Consolidated High School Class of 1969 and never missed a class reunion. In 1972, Buchanan served in South Vietnam with the 196th Brigade, The Americal Division and found closure with a 2020 return trip to the Danang region. After his military service, John worked at the Jefferson Proving Ground as an artillery repairman, earned a degree in mechanical drafting at Ivy Tech Community College and raised tobacco for 40 years. In his youth, John was a homerun-hitting softball player and a district president with Indiana Rural Youth where he met his future wife. John and Karen were married on June 26, 1977 and built a home on Bacon Ridge. John was a wonderful father to Melissa and Rex, always ready to play games and teach mechanical, carpentry and agricultural skills. John and Karen's welcoming home was always open to their children's friends. John was a dependable friend and neighbor, who never missed a birthday or the chance to analyze a building project. In his retirement, John enjoyed twice daily walks, invigorating conversations with The Freethinkers Society and travel to see his children and grandchildren.
