Professor of Mathematics, William Donald "Bill" Markel

Professor William Donald "Bill" Markel, age 76, of Hanover, Indiana, was born on May 2, 1933 in Columbus, Ohio to Eldon & Leona Starr Markel. He was a 1951 graduate of Withrow High School in Cincinnati, Ohio. After graduating from Denison College in Granville, Ohio, Bill was inducted into the United States Army and was honorably discharged. He received his Master's in Mathematics from the University of Alaska and his Doctorate in Mathematics from the University of Toledo. He was united in marriage on December 29, 1978 to Louise Margaret Waite in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. He had served as Professor of Mathematics and chair of the Department of Education at Hanover College from 1987 – 2002, having taught and at Defiance College in Defiance, Ohio and Tri State College in Northern Indiana. He was passionate about fitness, music and mathematics. Even after his retirement, he continued his studies. He was an avid runner and cyclist. He was a faithful member of the Kiwanis Club of Madison, having served as club president and in many other capacities. Bill was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. Bill died Friday, February 5, 2010 at 5:15 p.m. at The Water's of Clifty Falls in Madison, Indiana with his family at his side.

Bill will be missed by his loving wife: Louise Margaret Waite Markel of Hanover, Indiana; his daughter: Deborah Markel of Kent, Ohio; his sons: Wade Markel & his wife: Sarah of Alexandria, Virginia, Jeffrey Wonser & his wife: Amy of Peachtree City, Georgia, Bradford Anthony Markel of Bentonville, Arkansas; his brother: Edward Markel & his wife: Rose of Port Clinton, Ohio; his grandchildren: Gareth, Blythe & James. He was preceded in death by his parents: Eldon & Leona Starr Markel.


MEMORIAL CEREMONY
Services will be conducted Wednesday, February 10, 2010 at 1:00 p.m., by Reverend Greg Russell at the Indiana Veteran's Memorial Cemetery Chapel, 1415 North Gate Road in Madison, Indiana. Jefferson Post 9, of the American Legion will render military honors. Interment will follow in the Indiana Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Madison, Indiana.


VISITATION
Friends may call Tuesday from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. at the Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre, 325 Demaree Drive in Madison, Indiana and 12:30 p.m. until time of the service at the Indiana Veteran's Memorial Cemetery Chapel in Madison, Indiana.
