Mr. Lawrence "Chic" Kemper, age 93, of Bloomington formerly of Hanover, Indiana, entered this life on August 18, 1916, in Jefferson County, Indiana. He was the son of Tilman & Lillie Chinn Kemper. He resided nearly all of his life in Jefferson County and had attended Hanover High School until the ninth grade. He then began working for Mr. Whitsitt the Mailman at the age of fifteen for a couple of years and was able to purchase his first car. At the age of seventeen he began a new career, as he stated "Gambling on farming" and he continued that career until he retired in 1979. Chic was united in marriage to Helen Charlotte Rogers on September 29, 1937, in Jeffersonville, Indiana. To this happy union arrived a son and a daughter to bless their home. Chic and Helen enjoyed nearly sixty one years of marriage together until her death on June 30, 1998. He also spent a couple of years working for Morgan Packing Company in Austin. Chic was very proud of his legacy of farming and the meticulous care he took in caring for his land. He was proud to have established that great commitment in his children's lives as well. He faithfully attended the Kent United Methodist Church and served on various committees. Chic and Helen enjoyed entertaining the youth of the church at their farm as well as helping with the Baptism by the use of their lake. Chic was a member of the Indiana Farm Bureau and enjoyed his years of participation. He also enjoyed woodworking, growing a beautiful garden and sharing its produce. He loved to fish and visit with family and friends. Chic and Helen participated for 42 years in the Christian Children's Fund, helping underprivileged children all over the World. He had resided in Bloomington the past three and a half years to be close to his family when his health began to fail. Chic's family was blessed to have him for ninety three years and will miss him greatly. Chic will be remembered for his wonderful smile and gentle nature. Lawrence "Chic" Kemper died on Friday, January 29, 2010 at 1:10 a.m. with his loving family at his side at the Bloomington Hospital in Bloomington, Indiana.
